I used Lucas' The Fine art of Public Speaking (11th Edition with Connect) for my Speech communication Communication course at Baruch Higher. While I wound upward being very impressed with the textbook, I felt that information technology had a number of pregnant shortcomings and wound upward preferring Engleberg and Daly'south Presentations in Everyday Life, which I used in a Public Speaking course at Wagner Higher.

First, the strengths. Lucas'south volume is the about recognizable textbook in the field for some practiced reasons. Lucas provides a very articulate guide to public speaking, giving physical examples of how to arroyo dissimilar types of speeches and how to arts and crafts and ready for them. The text is clearly stated, updated to refer to electric current events and issues, and beautifully illustrated. For those reasons, I think the book is valuable.

But the biggest negative chemical element is its price bespeak. Retailing at over $100, the volume is but not affordable for many students at public universities, and asking them to buy it is non ethical, especially when there are so many competing options which are all cheaper--some at one-half the toll or less. The "Connect" multimedia CD is useful but probably part of the high price bespeak, and ultimately I don't think the CD is necessary at all for students to acquire effectively from the book. A further negative element, in my mind, is that Lucas's text is singlemindedly focused on public speaking classes. I think information technology would exist valuable to augment the gaze of this volume to discuss how the skills taught in the book tin be applied to many other situations outside of the classroom and in daily life.

This volume presents public speaking in an interesting writing way. The discussions in the book are topical and the example speeches do a good task of showing the strengths and weaknesses of amateur public speakers in a class. I thought it did a slap-up job of pointing out things to think about when making a speech that you may not automatically call back about. I learned lessons that I will be able to employ in argument and public speaking for a long time.

As a preacher of the gospel who engages in public speaking every calendar week of my life, I desire to exist every bit polished equally possible. However, nosotros always need to be conscientious non to depend on the methods more than the message. Preachers need to be as well rounded and gracious as possible, simply at the finish of the day our goal should be to please the audience of One ☝️

This is an excellent book full of not bad suggestions for writing and giving presentations. I tin imagine any other book about public speaking beingness insanely dry, but Lucas kept his chapters full of funny (if not completely believable) examples. He also includes smashing laundry lists of what to include in informative, persuasive, and group presentations.
